This half hardy fern can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F). Grow in a summer container that can be brought under cover over winter, or in the open border in coastal/mild parts of the UK in a position where it will be protected from frost. Pteris nipponica is also suitable for growing indoors as a houseplant.

Grow in partial shade in fertile, acid or neutral soil in a position that is reliably moist and cool. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established.
