From the scarlet berries of Cotoneaster franchetii to the sunny yellow of Pyracantha ‘Soleil d’Or’, adding winter berries to your garden is easy and rewarding. English yew (Taxus baccata), and Gaultheria procumbens are evergreens with red berries. Holly and pyracantha are also evergreen and have berries of red, yellow or black. Sarcococca and Skimmia japonica have the added bonus of scent.
Sambucus nigra ‘Golden Tower’ is an upright variety that creates a relatively narrow shrub. Taxus baccata varieties can be clipped to keep them small, and holly can be grown in a container or as a standard.
Shrubs that produce berries are an important food source for birds. Grow holly, cotoneaster and pyracantha with red berries – easily spotted in green foliage, and birds seem to prefer them over other colours.
