So many beautiful flowers are available to start from seed. Our most popular flower seeds fly off the shelves for a reason! They’re reliable, bright and beautiful bloomers that bring cheer to wherever you plant them. To find the fastest flowers and the most reliable self-seeders check out the answers to our most frequently asked questions below.
The fastest blooming flowers to grow from seed are typically annuals. These flowers need to quickly put on growth to allow them to bloom and produce seed in one season. Sow annual wildflower seeds like poppies and cornflowers for pretty flowers within a few months.
Marigolds are all very quick to flower, but specifically tagetes like Marigold 'Starfire' produce blooms within a month of sowing. Scatter these seeds into warm soil, and around the base of veggies like tomatoes to attract pollinators and deter predators whilst adding bright colour to the veg patch.
The easiest flower seeds to grow must be nasturtiums. These annual sprawlers germinate reliably and only require a warm windowsill or patch of soil to do so. They have an easy, sprawling habit and come in a range of sizes and colours meaning you can customise your display easily. They’re also edible! The flowers have a peppery flavour and the seeds are delicious pickled and eaten like capers. Find other edible flower seeds in our collection to brighten salads and make healthy teas.
Sunflower maximiliani is an absolute delight and readily self seeds around the garden. Other popular flowers like alchemilla mollis, foxgloves and cosmos can self-seed and naturalise. Sowing self-seeding flowers is a very economical way to fill the garden with easy colour that requires no repeat sowings.
To enjoy flowers in winter, sow pansy and viola seeds in August and September. These hardy little bedding plants bloom in winter despite the cold temperatures and lack of light. It’s a good idea to sow some annual flower seeds like poppies and sweet peas in autumn to overwinter until temperatures warm in spring. This prompts the plants to flower earlier than usual. They put on strong healthy root growth in autumn that supports their rapid growth in spring.
