Currant fruit plants – more info

Perennial currant fruit plants will last for many years with just a little care. Get them off to a good start by adding plenty of organic matter or compost into the soil when planting. They will need pruning once a year and netting is a good idea to keep birds off your precious crop. There’s more specific information on our fruit advice page and in the questions below.

Can you grow currants in shade?

Most currants need a sunny spot to do well. However, Blackcurrant ‘Titania’, redcurrants ‘Laxton’s Number One’, ‘Jonkheer van Tets’ and ‘Rovada’, and whitecurrants ‘Blanka’ and ‘White Versailles’ will all cope with part-shade.

Which currants are best for eating raw?

Red, white and pink currants are delicious raw. Most blackcurrants are best cooked but ‘Ben Sarek’, ‘Big Ben’, ‘Ebony’, and ‘Summer Pearls Giant’ are all sweet enough to be eaten raw.

Which currants are best for small gardens?

If you want to pack more plants into a small garden, the Currant ‘Trio’ collection is a fantastic solution. It has redcurrants, blackcurrants and whitecurrants in one pot and grows well in a large container or border.
