Buying your roses as bare root plants makes sense. It’s usually the best budget option, the easiest to handle, and the best way to get your hands on multiple plants at the same time, especially useful if you’re planting a rose hedge. To point you in the right direction, here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
Potted rose plants come with green top growth and help you make an instant impact in your planting scheme. They’re often in bud and are delivered in a pot with soil and plenty of growing roots. A great option, they’re more expensive than bare root roses that are delivered while dormant, with no soil around their roots.
If you’re after a thorny rose, you can’t go wrong with a burnet rose. These are nicely thorny, making them ideal candidates for a security hedge with the added bonus of having delightfully scented open flowers in summer and rosy red hips in autumn. For a prickly, taller hedging rose go for ramanas rose bare root plants. These are super tough plants that reach a metre and a half tall with deep pink open flowers that are popular with pollinators.
Opt for a compact rose variety if you want to grow it in a pot. The two-tone flowers of rose 'For Your Eyes Only' make the perfect focal point for your patio, courtyard or balcony. This little powerhouse matures at a height and spread of 90cm.
Bare root roses grow fast when they’re in rich, fertile soil that is well drained. Plant your bare root roses down to the juncture between root and stem and water well before applying a layer of well rotted manure. This supports quick healthy growth.
Climbing roses provide fast-growing cover that greens a space quickly in spring, sending up foliage and flower buds. Rose 'Golden Showers' reaches a height of 3m and has an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliable performance. If you want to see quick growth and get blooms as fast as possible, this is a great choice.
