Climbing roses thrive in a variety of situations around your garden. Cover fences or walls, set them scrambling through large trees or have them rambling over a pergola. They bloom beautifully in many different colours, and often have a strong scent to add to their appeal. These summer-flowering beauties reward even the laziest gardeners with a multitude of flowers, and require minimal pruning.

There really is a climbing rose for everyone from repeat-flowering varieties, such as ‘Madame Isaac Péreire’, to those with knockout scent like ‘Belle de Jour’, and even a completely thornless variety, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’.
Get your roses off to a flying start by incorporating plenty of organic matter or compost into the ground when planting and using mycorrhizal fungi. Regular applications of rose food will help keep plants healthy.
For the earliest flowers, choose varieties of Rose banksiae, which will bloom in May.
‘Peter’s Persica’ is a compact variety that’s particularly suited to growing in a container. Others that would be suitable are ‘Dublin Bay’, Rose ‘Handel’ and ‘Love Knot’.
Although roses tend to prefer sunny spots, there are several that will cope with semi-shade. Some to try are ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Red Eden Rose, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, and ‘Masquerade’.
