When choosing oxygenating aquatic plants, think about where they are going to grow in your pond. Plants like Ceratophyllum demersum will grow in deep water so are ideal for the middle of a large pond. Others, including Hydrocotyle novae-zeelandiae, prefer the shallow margins of ponds. Try to have plants in all areas to boost oxygen levels and pond health.

For small ponds, the evergreen Common Mare’s Tail (Hippuris vulgaris) is a good choice. You could also try Callitriche stagnalis which remains active through autumn and winter, along with Fontinalis antipyretica.
Ceratophyllum demersum (or hornwort) is one of the best ways to oxygenate a large pond as it can grow at depth. Spiked Milfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) is another good choice for larger volumes of water.
Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides ‘Variegata’ (the variegated lawn pennywort) has beautiful scalloped foliage edged in cream. If you have flowing water, Ranunculus aquatilis is an attractive option with palmate foliage and white buttercup flowers in early summer.
