Trees – more information

Trees are a fantastic investment for the garden. Choose the variety you need from our excellent collections whether you're after an evergreen privacy hedge, autumn colour explosion or winter scent for many years to come. Large specimen trees like English oak and the aptly named tulip tree make spectacular focal points in the garden. Designers love the silvery bark of slim mid-sized betula utilis 'Jacquemontii' and the ethereal silver grey of eucalyptus gunnii in their landscapes. There are even trees for the smallest balcony or courtyard garden too! Check out our special container trees to find neat and compact varieties to brighten your small space.

When can you cut hedging?

The best time to cut hedging is in late winter. At this time of year your deciduous hedging trees are in their leafless dormancy whilst evergreens retain their leaves but growth has paused. Make sure you cut your hedging trees before 'bud break' in spring. Always use clean pruning saws and loppers when you are pruning trees.

Trim topiary to keep growing foliage neat and tidy throughout the summer months starting in May through to September. Cut your topiary gradually, stepping back between trims to make sure you're making the shape that you want. It can be easy to get carried away! If in doubt, come back to your topiary after an hours break with fresh eyes.

How to choose the best tree for a small garden

Size is an important factor when choosing a tree for a small garden. Make sure the mature height and spread is within your dimensions. Choose a tree that gives you real value for money with multiple seasons of interest from spring through to winter.

If you like to have scented blooms during the end of winter and early spring, a blush pink viburnum or vibrant yellow/orange hamamelis are both equally unbeatable for scent. For winter colour, forsythia is a top contender. This small tree's bare stems become thick with bright yellow blooms in late February and early March.

The best small tree for autumn colour is the Chelsea award winning Cercis 'Eternal Flame'. Bright pink spring blooms are followed by heart shaped leaves that really steal the show, flickering through the summer and autumn from red to burnt orange and then vibrant yellow.
