Evergreen trees – more info

Evergreen trees are a great way of adding winter interest and structure to your garden either as specimen plants or in a hedge. They’re also good for wildlife as they provide important winter shelter and, in some cases, food.

Can you grow evergreen trees in containers?

Many evergreen trees can be grown in pots. It’s a good way of growing lemons and limes as you can move the plants under cover during the winter. When planted in containers, standard evergreen trees such as olive, bay and holly make lovely focal points on paths or beside doorways. Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ is a small variety of the strawberry tree that’s perfect for a pot.

Which evergreen trees flower?

Several evergreen trees also have lovely flowers. Acacia dealbata gives a stunning display in early spring, and the dainty white flowers of Arbutus unedo give way to strawberry-like fruits. Lemons and limes have strongly perfumed flowers. For late summer and autumn flowers, choose Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ or ‘Goliath’.

Which evergreen trees are good for wildlife?

Evergreen trees that produce flowers, including Laurus nobilis, lemon, lime and arbutus, are good for pollinators. Holly, which produces berries, provides food for birds.
