Description
This shrub grows well in adverse conditions, preferring dry almost sandy soils, where it will thrive. Small, silvery leaves, almost willow-like in appearance appear in spring on the thorny stems, the yellow flowers will later produce orange, grape sized fruits which are a rich source of Vitamin C but will require a male plant to produce the best crops. An ideal plant to grow as hedging or screening, Sea Buckthorn is also well suited for coastal gardens. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Plant Hippophae rhamnoides in well drained, neutral to alkaline soil, this plant dislikes excessive moisture and also prefers full sun.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Feed and water until established. Sea Buckthorn requires little maintenance, only the occasional prune in late winter.
