Description
This English Yew is a medium-sized bushy evergreen tree with narrow, leathery, very dark green leaves. Male plants produce yellow cones in spring and female plants produce red cup-shaped non edible autumn fruits. Tolerant to dry soils and a good all round tough plant. They are ideal for growing as a formal hedge as the tolerate regular clipping and can be shaped into topiary very easily.. Unsurprisingly, Taxus baccata has been awarded a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting Distance: 30 - 45 cm (12" - 18"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Grow Yew trees in any well drained, fertile soil. Taxus is versatile and will happily grow on acid or alkaline soils. It will grow thrive in almost any position from full sun to deep shade.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until yew trees are fully established. Yew may be left unpruned to form a handsome tree, or pruned in summer and early autumn to create a dense, evergreen hedge.
