Description

A less well-known variety of Sweet Box, distinguished by its arching habit, and narrow, willow-like leaves that are up to 14cm long. A slow-growing, suckering, evergreen shrub, it makes a good choice for shady areas, and will even tolerate dense shade providing the soil is not too dry. In late winter, it bears small, greenish-white, spidery flowers that have a spicy, vanilla fragrance and provide an excellent source of early nectar for beneficial pollinators. The flowers are followed by fleshy purple berries that are enjoyed by the birds. Sarcococca saligna is useful as a low-growing, evergreen, shade-tolerant shrub. It may also be used as a formal or informal hedging plant. Height: 1m (39in). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow sarcococca in any moist, well drained garden soil in a sheltered position, in semi-shade or shade. Christmas box will tolerate full sun and dry shade provided that the soil remains moist. Alternatively grow sarcococca plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
More Info
Feed and water regularly until young shrubs become established. Once established, Sarcococca will require little attention and often thrives on neglect. Pruning is not required other than to shape the plant if required, and to remove and unwanted suckers from the base of the plant.
