Description

All named after European cities, Peony Capital Trio offers the glamour of peonies in even the smallest of spaces. Traditional herbaceous peonies are not suited to growing in pots, but Peony Capital Trio has been specifically developed for successful container growing, flowering prolifically on much shorter plants. Peony Capital Trio form neat bushy mounds of lush, deeply lobed, dark green leaves. Strong stems remove the need for staking and, unlike traditional varieties where the heavy blooms droop downwards spoiling the display, the flowers are held upright, their pert faces inviting admiration even when planted in low containers. Despite their petite proportions, Peony Capital Trio boasts large blooms that are produced in abundance.

Herbaceous peonies will last a lifetime in your garden, giving late spring to early summer displays of show-stopping, ruffled blooms each year for the minimum of effort. Plant them in borders or containers, where they will add structure, glamour and rich colour. They also make fabulous cut flowers.

Peony Capital Trio consists of the following varieties:

  • Peony ‘London’ – Large, double, deep pink flowers. Height: 55cm (22in). Spread: 30cm (12in)
  • Peony ‘Madrid’ - Single white cup-shaped blooms and a central creamy-white ruff. Height: 75cm (30in). Spread: 40cm (16in).
  • Peony ‘Rome’ - Large double sugar-pink flowers. Height: 60cm (24in). Spread: 40cm (16in).

How to Grow

Grow peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant herbaceous peonies at a depth of around 5cm (2") below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may delay flowering.

These bareroot peonies are lifted from the nursery field when dormant and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. The crown should be planted no more than 2.5–5cm below the surface. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. New growth will appear in spring. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots.

More Info
Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring. Plants may take several years to establish before they produce their spectacular peony flowers.
