Description

The glossy red berries of this blue Holly are a sure sign that Christmas is approaching! This eye catching evergreen is supplied as a standard tree, making the perfect container plant for framing your front door.

As the name suggests, Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Maid’ is a female variety. It produces tiny white flowers in spring which, if pollinated by a male variety, are followed by a profusion of holly berries in future years. Once established, the scarlet berries contrast beautifully with its glossy, purple-green foliage. Unlike many Hollies, the leaves are not especially spiky - so there’s no chance of your visitors being prickled as they pass.

This low maintenance evergreen is ideal for patio containers or planting directly into borders, providing year round structure and colour in the garden. Supplied as a 2-year-old plant in a pot with an average height of 75cm (30"), and a 30cm (12") wide head of foliage. Ultimate height: 1.5m (5’). Ultimate spread: 60cm (24").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant standard Holly trees in garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade. Alternatively grow Holly tree standards in large patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
More Info
Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Prune Holly standards to shape while the plants are young. Prune in summer, removing any damaged stems and trimming the head of the standard to a spherical shape. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Avoid mounding mulch up around the stem as this may cause it to rot.
