Flowering Months

A short and sturdy Helenium that is useful for providing a long season of colour in small gardens or at the front of a deep border. From July to September, Helenium 'Mardi Gras' bears unusually large, yellow, daisy-like flowers with a prominent yellow-brown cone at the centre. The flowers deepen to orange as they age. The blooms are held on stiff stems above neat clumps of mid-green leaves. Highly attractive to beneficial pollinators. Height: 75cm (30in). Spread: 60cm (24in).

How to Grow

Plant Heleniums in full sun. This hardy perennial prefers a soil that is rich in organic matter and reliably moist. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil to improve its structure and fertility prior to planting.

Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded helenium flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Divide overcrowded clumps of helenium in spring and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
