Description

Often seen in natural hedgerows, Hawthorn is the perfect security hedging, its thorny braches form a dense thicket that is almost impossible to penetrate. Not only is the Hawthorn a great deterrent, it is a highly decorative shrub too, clusters of white flowes can cover it in late spring which later develop into bunches of bright red berries which are much sought after by birds. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting distance: 30cm (12” ). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

For instant impact try one of one of our innovative trough-grown hedges! Each trough contains a 1 metre length of pre-planted hedging to create a mature looking hedge from the very moment it is planted. With well-established root systems, you’ll find that trough-grown hedges are correctly spaced, making them much easier to plant. The healthy framework of branches are nicely knitted together, and can be trimmed to the ideal height immediately after planting. Better still, you can plant them all year round, so long as adequate irrigation is provided. If planting is delayed then trough-grown hedges can be easily maintained until you are ready, without the need for ‘heeling in’.

How to Grow
Grow Hawthorn hedges on reliably moist but well drained soil, incorporate planty of well rotted manure or compost along the line of the hedge before planting.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Water regularly until established, Apply a mulch in the first two winters to protect the roots and to give extra feed.
