Description
The bright golden yellow leaves of the Golden Elderberry make it a hedge that stands out and will make itself noticed. The large leaves of this deciduous large shrub form a dense covering, making it an ideal windbreak or screen. During the summer months it will be covered in the characteristic clusters of tiny, creamy white flowers which later develop into the well known elderberries, which are loved by birds. A good choice for a decorative and wildlife friendly hedge. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Elderberry require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too tall after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning.
