Foraging is becoming ever popular, with people looking for foods that are outside the norm but are also sustainable and found growing in the wild. We have put together a collection of hedging plants that can be grown together to make a great looking hedge and at the same time provide you with edible fruits in one form or another:
Blackthorn will produce sloes which are famously used for making sloe gin but can also be used to make jam or jelly and can also be cooked in meat dishes.
Crab Apples can be cooked into desserts or made into crab apple jelly, as they are also high in pectin this can be used when making other jams or preserves.
Elderberry flowers and fruits have many uses, wine and cordial drinks being the most popular.
Sea Buckthorn has bright orange fruits that are rich in vitamin C and E, the juice and oils can be used for health benefits and even the leaves can be used for making tea.
Wild Cherries, whilst bitter if eaten raw, can be cooked into pies and tarts with sugar to make them a tasty dessert.
Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting Distance: 45cm (18"). (3 plants per metre for a single line hedge).
