Description

Erect, fresh green fronds rise up into a bold shuttlecock shape reaching up to 120cm. The young fronds with their coiled crosiers in bright acid green are especially fabulous in spring. Dryopteris filix-mas or ‘Male Fern’ is a vigorous fern, native to the UK. It is particularly useful for being one of the few ferns that are tolerant of dry shade. Low maintenance and easy to grow, once well established it will adapt to challenging situations. The dying fronds turn copper in autumn and can be cleared away in spring to enjoy the site of fresh young croziers emerging. Looks perfect with other informal woodland plants such as Digitalis and Pulmonaria. Height: 120cm (47in).  Spread: 100cm (39in).

How to Grow
Plant in partial shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
