Description

A pretty dwarf allium with pompom heads of soft lilac flowers and dark purple anthers from June to September above low mounds of twisted leaves. Growing wild on mountain meadows but now largely extinct in its native habitat, Mountain garlic or Allium senescens, is a traditional German cottage garden plant. The charming flowers and neat foliage make it a worthy ornamental, but all parts of the plant are also edible, adding a fine garlic flavour to salads and other dishes. Plant it along the edge of ornamental borders, or grow it in the veg plot where its flowers will lure pollinating insects. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 10cm (4in).

How to Grow
Alliums thrive in free-draining soils in full sun. If growing in clay soils, add grit when planting to improve drainage. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4”) and a distance of 10cm (4”) apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
More Info
Alliums require little maintenance. Leave stems of faded allium flowers intact to enjoy their spectacular seed heads in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps of alliums after flowering. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
