A traditional female variety that looks much like the species with glossy green, spiny foliage and spherical, shiny red berries. In time, this handsome variety forms a narrowly upright, dense evergreen tree that offers useful cover and a valuable source of food for winter birdlife. Once established Holly 'Green Alaska' is particularly good at smothering itself in shiny red berries, just in time for Christmas, making a colourful addition to Christmas wreaths and other decorations. This robust evergreen is especially hardy and forms a useful windbreak tree for year round interest in even the coldest gardens.
Holly head diameter 20-30cm. Ultimate height if left unpruned: 10m (32'). Ultimate spread if left unpruned: 3m (9').
Hollies that are dioecious have separate male flowers on one plant and female on another, but you need both for pollination resulting in berries. The female plants produce berries, but only if they are fertilised by pollen from a male plant. In other words, two separate plants are required in order to produce berries.
If the male hollies are too far away from the female hollies, the females cannot produce berries.
Make sure that the female holly shrubs are within 200 yards (183 m.) of a male holly shrub.
Please note, hessian wrap and ribbon as illustrated is not included.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
