How to choose the best bare root trees for your garden

If you’re looking for a striking ornamental tree, why not try the Korean Fir which has beautiful violet-blue cones. For bigger gardens, the Truffle Tree Oak not only makes a beautiful tree, it also provides truffles! See our advice on what to do with bare root plants when they arrive and read the Frequently Asked Questions below for more tips.

Which bare root trees are good for wildlife?

All trees provide important shelter and habitats for wildlife, but if you choose trees that flower at different times of the year you’ll attract plenty of pollinators. Trees that bear fruit and berries are especially attractive to birds. Good choices include magnolia, cherry plum, blackthorn, wild cherry and rowan.

Which bare root trees have winter interest?

Both green and copper beech hold on to their leaves for most of the winter, while scarlet willow has vibrant winter stems. The white trunks of silver birch are also good for winter interest.

Which bare root trees are suitable for small gardens?

If you’re short on space, why not try one of our magnolias which are great for small gardens and can even be grown in a container. ‘Sunspire’ is an upright variety that makes a lovely patio specimen and ‘Sunrise Beauty’ is a compact plant.
