Description
Abies nordmanniana makes a large, conical specimen with a majestic presence in the landscape. Commonly known as the Normann Fir, it is best known for its traditional use as a Christmas tree, with particularly long lasting needles. The dark, aromatic, evergreen needles are borne on downward sweeping branches, accompanied by long cones which make an attractive feature. This resilient conifer makes an excellent screening tree or stand-alone specimen for year round interest. This elegant tree will become a very large tspecimen with maturity, so be sure to give it plenty of space. Ultimate height: Up to 30m (98’). Spread: 8m (26’).

How to Grow
Grow Abies in reliably moist, fertile, neutral to slightly acid, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. A sheltered site with even light is preferable to ensure even growth and retain its elegant shape. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
In the first few years after planting, water Fir trees regularly, particularly during dry periods until they are fully established. Abies will naturally form an elegant conical shaped tree. No pruning is required.
