Description

Magnolia ‘Pink Perfection’ is an exciting chance seedling of the fabulous Magnolia ‘Encore’. This rare, loebneri-type variety shares the floriferous nature of its parent, with the same dainty elongated petals forming fragrant, star-like blooms, but what sets ‘Pink Perfection’ apart is the astonishing quantity of petals. In fact, each bloom has an incredible 42-48 petals and they come in an exquisite lilac-pink. The flowers appear on bare branches in spring and open in succession, creating a long-lasting display. Magnolia 'Pink Perfection' slowly develops into a bushy, rounded, small tree or large shrub. Its slow-growing, compact habit makes it ideal as a specimen tree for small gardens. It also suits growing in a large container in a sheltered position. Height and spread: 2-5m (8-15ft).

How to Grow

Plant in a sunny or semi shaded position that recieves a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunshine per day and is sheltered from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Suitable for acid soils only that are rich, moist and well-drained. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant. When growing in a patio container use a blend of ericaceous compost mixed with John Innes No. 3.

More Info

Water regularly throughout the growing season until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Fertilise once a year in the spring with a slow release tree and shrub fertiliser.

Protect from cold winds and hard frosts which can cause foliar damage.

Plants in pots will be at increased risk of the root ball becoming completely frozen and should be moved into a sheltered location, conservatory or cool greenhouse over winter.

Tolerates pruning well. The best time to prune is after blooming. Remove old or diseased wood and trim to shape.
