With its elegant habit, beautiful foliage and showy, pendulous flowers, Sophora microphylla ‘Sun King’ is a shrub that deserves to be more widely grown. In the drab landscape of late winter/early spring, it injects a bolt of much needed colour. Racemes of slender, pendulous buds open into brilliant yellow, bell-shaped flowers with prominent anthers, each about 5cm long. Their intense yellow colour and exotic appearance deliver a glorious fanfare for the coming spring.
Sophora microphylla ‘Sun King’ forms a bushy, evergreen shrub, extending long branches covered in handsome, pinnate leaves. Each leaf is composed of up to 40 pairs of small, glossy, dark green, oval leaflets.
Although reliably hardy in the UK, Sophora microphylla ‘Sun King’ requires a sheltered position to do its best. Grow it at the back of a border and leave it to form an open shrub or train its long stems against a warm, sunny, west or south-facing wall. It makes an excellent choice for a warm, sheltered courtyard or city garden. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height and spread: 3m (10ft).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow in a warm sheltered position in full sun, preferably against a warm, sunny, west or south-facing wall. Requires well-drained soil.
Protect from cold, drying winds. Sophora microphylla ‘Sun King’ is hardy in most parts of the UK but may suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters and cold areas of the UK. However, it will readily reshoot if the dead growth is removed in late spring after all danger of frost has passed.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
