Description

These large flowered varieties are informally grouped together as Dinnerplate Dahlias – and for good reason. Each spectacular bloom grows up to 30cm (12") across! These magnificent Dahlias produce an unforgettable display of giant blooms in summer, which make irresistible cut flowers. The colossal flower heads are held upon sturdy, upright stems, making a dramatic focal point at the back of borders. Perfect for exotic planting schemes, cut flower gardens, or simply impressing your neighbours!

Dahlia 'Dinner Plate' Collection comprises the following six varieties:

  • Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’ - Exquisite blooms in soft apricot-pink colours which slowly fade to warm blush-cream. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 60cm (24").
  • Dahlia 'Sun Explosion' - Fiery Decorative dahlia with flaming yellow and red blooms. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 50cm (20").
  • Dahlia 'Spartacus' - Very striking dark-crimson decorative dahlia. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 50cm (20").
  • Dahlia 'White Perfection' - Dinnerplate dahlia with huge pristine white flowers. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 60cm (24").
  • Dahlia ‘Wanda's Capella’ – Large buttery yellow blooms that measure up to 30cm (12") diameter. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 60cm (24").
  • Dahlia 'Englands Glory' – A semi-cactus variety with bright purple petals each tipped in dazzling white. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 50cm (20").

How to Grow
Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.
More Info
Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
