Rhododendron 'Encore Autumn Fire' is a semi-evergreen variety from the Azalea Group. This dazzling variety is particularly notable for repeat flowering in autumn, especially when planted in a sunny spot. The first flush of large, semi-double blooms appears in mid-spring, lighting up garden borders with a vibrant display. In autumn the blooms begin again, just as the foliage turns to deep purple. In cold locations it will lose some foliage during the winter months, with fresh, glossy leaves taking their place in spring. A superb specimen plant for acid borders and containers. Height and spread: 120cm (48").

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
