Description
Dogwood is usually grown for its vivid bare stems, which give incredible winter colour. Cornus alba is an easy to grow shrub, which will soon form an effective hedge that not only looks good in late spring when the white flowers are in bloom and covering it but also right through to winter when the bright red stems are left bare and will really show themselves off. Dogwood is a resilient, problem-free shrub for a sunny spot; it requires a moist, well-drained soil but can also tolerate consistently damp areas. Height:4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 30cm (12"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Plant Dogwood in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full shade or part shade. Cornus is a very useful shrub, as it can also tolerate damp soils or an exposed position.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Feed and water dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, they will require less attention. To encourage plenty of colourful stems, Dogwood will need regular pollarding in early spring. Cut back all dogwood stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning.
