Description
Prunus padus 'Le Thoureil' produces a fine display of white flowers which are borne in dense racemes in late spring. Small black fruits sometimes follow during summer. In fact, its season of interest extends well into autumn, when the foliage turns to lovely shades of red, orange and gold. With an upright, oval shaped crown, this cultivated form of our native Bird Cherry makes a good specimen tree for modest sized gardens. Height: 6m (19’). Spread: 3m (10’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

Plant cherry trees in any well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant ornamental cherry trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.

More Info

Ornamental cherry trees do not suffer weed competition well. Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the tree, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
