Description

Portugal Laurel is a large, hardy, evergreen shrub/small tree. Most commonly grown as hedging this RHS Award of Garden Merit holder, has dark red shoots which open up to bear glossy dark green leaves that will grow to densely cover the shrub. During spring, long racemes of small but fragrant white flowers are produced which will become small, dark purple fruits by autumn. Easy to grow and requiring little of no maintenance, Prunus lusitanica can be pruned and shaped if required. Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26')

For instant impact try one of one of our innovative trough-grown hedges! Each trough contains a 1 metre length of pre-planted hedging to create a mature looking hedge from the very moment it is planted. With well-established root systems, you’ll find that trough-grown hedges are correctly spaced, making them much easier to plant. The healthy framework of branches are nicely knitted together, and can be trimmed to the ideal height immediately after planting. Better still, you can plant them all year round, so long as adequate irrigation is provided. If planting is delayed then trough-grown hedges can be easily maintained until you are ready, without the need for ‘heeling in’.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Portugal Laurel plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Prunus shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting a Portugal Laurel hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm (2’,6") apart.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Prunus plants require only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Portugal Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
