Description
Prunus lusitanica 'Angustifolia' is a more formal, tidier looking variety of the Portugal Laurel. Its longer and narrower leaves grow on red-purple stems giving it an interesting appearance and providing some additional colour during the year. Most commonly used as a hedging plant, 'Angustifolia' will tolerate most soil conditions and is particularly good in chalky soils too. Small white flowers appear all over this evergreen shrub in summer, slowly becoming small red fruits by autumn, both are enjoyed by wildlife. Only needing one prune per year - if required at all - this shrub is low maintenance and very easy to care for. Height: 500cm (197"). Spread: 400cm (157").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Portugal Laurel plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Prunus shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting a Portugal Laurel hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm (2’,6") apart.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Prunus plants require only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Portugal Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
