Description

Tall but slender, Prunus laurocerasus ‘Genolia’ is ideal for small gardens where you need a dense evergreen screen or hedge that remains narrow.

Glossy, deep green, leathery leaves create a lush backdrop whilst the columnar habit of Prunus laurocerasus ‘Genolia’ offers reduced pruning and trimming and excellent privacy without occupying too much space. In spring, it bears upright racemes of sweet-smelling white flowers which are attractive to pollinators. The flowers are followed by round berries that turn from red to glossy black berries and are loved by birds. This tough shrub is ideal for difficult situations such as dry shady spots beneath mature trees or heavy clay soils. It provides flowers and fruit for wildlife along with dense evergreen cover for nesting birds, making it a good choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. Height: 2.5 – 4m (8.2-13.1ft). Spread: 0.5-1m (1.6-3.2ft).

How to Grow
Grow Cherry Laurel plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Prunus shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting a Cherry Laurel hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm (2’,6") apart.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Prunus plants require only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Cherry Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary. Caution: harmful if eaten.
