Description

An exceptionally beautiful specimen conifer, forming an elegant pyramidal tree with cascading, tassel-like needles and attractive cones. Often considered to be the most handsome of all pine species, it has been recognised with an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Pinus wallichiana has a broad pyramidal habit with horizontal lower branches that remain on the tree right down to the ground. The upper branches are slightly ascending. Slender, blue-grey needles up to 20cm long are held in bunches of 5 and droop loosely down creating a soft, feathery texture. Cones about 25cm in length, emerge resinous blue-green and erect when young, turning light brown and becoming pendant with age. The trunk has smooth, grey-green bark on young trees, maturing to flaky dark grey plates. Pinus wallichiana exhibits high resistance to air pollution, making it well suited to urban sites.

Maximum height at maturity: 9-15m (30-50ft). Maximum spread at maturity: 6-10m (20-35ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
