Description

The Black Pine makes an impressive and long-lived specimen tree for large gardens, particularly in difficult exposed conditions. It forms a denser canopy than the Scots Pine, developing a pyramidal crown that becomes broader and more irregular with maturity. The stiff, dark green needles are around 10-15cm long and grow in pairs. Grey to yellow-brown bark develops deep vertical fissures with age, breaking up into scaly plates. It carries handsome cones around 5-8cm long that are green when young, maturing to brown.

Pinus nigra is an extremely hardy tree, tolerating sea winds, pollution, drought and exposure once well established. This adaptable and resilient tree will grow in almost any conditions, including chalk, provided it gets full sun and the ground never becomes waterlogged. Pinus nigra makes a superb choice for coastal gardens and as a shelterbelt tree. Mature height: over 20m (66ft). Spread: over 6m (20ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
