Description
Bring colour to even the smallest garden borders with this superb dwarf Ninebark. The new leaves of Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil' emerge bright red before maturing to deep burgundy by summer. The dark foliage contrasts beautifully with clusters of pink flowers that adorn the branch tips from June. By late summer the flowers are replaced by attractive fruits. Undemanding and easy to grow, this compact variety makes a superb choice for beginner gardeners, providing a long season of interest for little effort. Height and spread: 1.2m (4').

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant Physocarpus in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acid to neutral soil, but will tolerate more alkaline soils, although may they may become chlorotic in very chalky areas. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest. Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
