Description

From late spring to late summer, Oenothera tetragona bears 2-inch, saucer-shaped flowers in golden yellow which contrast beautifully with its red tinged buds and stems. The erect flower stems are held above glossy green, narrow leaves. This evening primrose loves freely draining soil where it will happily seed about if you let it. Grow it with other Mediterranean dry-loving species. It associates especially well with contrasting blue-flowered plants such as Eryngiums or Lavenders. Evening primroses are low maintenance plants which blend effortlessly into naturalistic schemes and cope well with dry hot sites such as wall side borders or coastal gardens.

Height: 60-80cm (24-31"). Spread: 40cm(16”).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Sowing
Germinate February to May at 18-20C (64-68F) on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost. Apply a fine sprinkling of vermiculite, but do not cover the seed completely. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

Transplant seedlings, when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for at least 14 days before planting out. Plant outside after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.

How to Grow
Grow in light, freely draining soils in full sun.
More Info
Feed and water regularly until they are fully established. Once established they are reasonably tolerant of drought and will require little maintenance. Cut down the flowering stems when they have finished.
