Description

With their awesome colours and bold silhouettes, this Mangave Trio really strikes a pose on the patio! These unusual succulents form fleshy rosettes of evergreen spiky leaves edged with soft spines. Displayed as a collection they make a stylish design statement. Their strong symmetry and glowing colours form dramatic living sculptures which instantly capture attention.

Mangaves are an innovative cross between Agave and Manfreda, combining the best qualities of both. They’re fast-growing, drought tolerant, low maintenance and hardier than Agave, plus they come in a fabulous array of colours and forms.

In very mild coastal and city gardens, these tender succulents can be grown outside all year. Alternatively pop them into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory to over-winter. Height: 25cm (10in). Spread: 50cm (20in).

Mangave Trio comprises the following varieties:

  • Mangave ‘Blazing Saddles’ – A concentric star of spiky leaves heavily marbled with deep maroon spots against a pale green background. Each sharply pointed leaf has tiny comb-like spines along the margin.
  • Mangave ‘Frosted Elegance’ - Shimmering glaucous-blue leaves, each arching leaf marked with a soft green central band. The margin of each leaf is edged with tiny spines like a fine comb.
  • Mangave ‘Praying Hands’ - Unique shape. Each dark green leaf curls upwards into the form of an artichoke. The tip of each leaf is finished with a maroon spine, the spines converging at the top where the artichoke comes to a point.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow

Grow Mangave in a container using very free-draining soil or cactus compost. Grow in full sun outside or within a few metres of a south-facing window in a conservatory/glasshouse maintaining a temperature of 8° - 32°C (46° - 90°F). Mangave can be grown outdoors in the UK between spring and summer as a patio plant or planted in a free-draining, sunny border as perennial bedding.

Water regularly in summer but allow the compost to almost completely dry out between waterings following a 'drenches between droughts' regime. Feed every 2 months in the growing season with a cactus fertiliser. Keep dry in winter. Except in very mild areas they will need to be brought indoors over winter.

Repot every 3 years or so, moving up into a pot just slightly bigger than the previous one. Mangaves can be propagated very easily from offsets that form around the base.
