Description
Evergreen Magnolias are prized for their handsome, glossy foliage with rust brown undersides. They make superb subjects for training against a wall or as a free standing focal point. This stately variety has a narrow, columnar habit, and slow growth rate, making it ideal for small gardens and restricted spaces. The cup-shaped, creamy-white blooms are borne in summer, producing a magnificent display, even from a young age. The elegant flowers are deeply fragrant, producing a sweet lemon perfume. With its slender, upright growth, Magnolia grandiflora ‘Alta’ also makes a versatile evergreen for creating screens and hedges. Height: 6m (20’). Spread: 2m (6’,6”).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young magnolias are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems or crossing stems.
