Description

Also known as Pride of India or Golden Rain tree, Koelreuteria paniculata is a spectacular deciduous tree or tall shrub from Eastern Asia that is packed with interest throughout the year: spring foliage colour, autumn foliage colour, summer flowers and ornamental seed pods.

Koelreuteria paniculata is a slow-growing tree, steadily forming a dome-shaped crown with silvery grey branches and textured bark. It bears large, elegant, pinnate leaves up to 40cm long, composed of leaflets with serrated edges. In spring, the leaves emerge an attractive bronze/pink whilst in autumn they deliver a dazzling display of fiery oranges and yellows. July and August see a show of bright yellow flowers held in long panicles, 20-40cm in length. The flowers are followed by ornamental bladder-like pods that resemble papery lanterns. The pods emerge green and mature to orange and pink.

This award-winning tree can be grown as a single-stemmed solitary specimen or a multi-stemmed tree/shrub. Shallow-rooted, it can even be grown in a large container to make a striking feature in a patio or courtyard garden. Drought tolerant once established, it requires a sunny, sheltered position in freely draining soil and is tolerant of urban pollution and shallow, chalky soils. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Maximum height and spread: 10m (33ft).

How to Grow

Grow Koelreuteria in a sunny, sheltered position protected from cold winds in freely draining soil. Will tolerate shallow calcareous soils. When planting, plant at the same level as the level of the nursery pot or just above, ensuring that the root flare is not buried. For large trees provide suitable support with posts and tree ties. Maintain a 1m diameter circle of bare ground around the tree to prevent competition from grass and weeds for water and nutrients. Failure to do this will significantly affect the growth of the tree. Water well in the first two years until the tree is well established. Take special care during dry springs.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
