Description

Hostas are easy to grow ground cover for shady borders or for growing on pots on shaded patios. Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans is an RHS Award of Garden Merit holder, which is strong-growing, clump-forming. Hosta plants will thrive in moist, damp, dark borders, or difficult, dry shady borders.

The Giant Blue Hosta has architectural, blue-green foliage, which is great for the shaded end of cottage garden borders. In the summer, the robust growth plays host to pale lilac, bell-shaped flowers appear on stems held above the foliage. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 120cm (48").

Culinary note: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water Hosta plants regularly throughout summer until fully established. In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
