Description

Hosta 'Francee' is a tough, weatherproof variety with foliage that is deeply ribbed and edged in jagged, cream margins. When protected from slugs, this vigorous hardy plant will quickly form clumps of foliage that can light up a shady spot.

In mid summer, this RHS Award of Garden Merit variety produces attractive flower spikes that stand above the foliage. Hostas are recommended for borders, woodland gardens and patio pots, thriving in shade. Height: 55cm (22"). Spread: 100cm (39").

Culinary note: The best part to use is the hoston, the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Hosta plants in sun or dappled shade, on rich, moist, well-drained soil. Plants can grow well in a sunny border, but will need to be kept reliably moist. Plants may perform better on slightly acid soils. Before planting, work some fresh compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Alternatively plant Hostas in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Water Hosta plants regularly throughout summer until fully established. In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Lift and divide Hosta plants in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.
