Description
A fiery honeysuckle with long, trumpet-shaped orange-red flowers produced over a long period from July to September. Vigorous and semi-evergreen in all but the coldest winters, Honeysuckle 'Dropmore Scarlet' is superb for rapidly covering unsightly garden features, walls and fences. Although unscented, this robust climber more than makes up for it with its blue-green leaves and abundance of vivid blooms which are often followed by bright red berries. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 2m (7').

Culinary note: The parboiled leaves are used as a vegetable and the flowers can be sucked for their sweet nectar, used as a vegetable or made into a syrup and pudding. A tea can also be made from the leaves, buds and flowers. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Pot up lonicera plants and grow them on until large enough to plant out in their final positions. When they are well grown, gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant honeysuckle against a suitable, sturdy support such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas, in fertile, moist, free draining soil. Poor soils can be improved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade. When growing honeysuckle in patio containers, use soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info
Feed and water lonicera regularly throughout the growing season until they are fully established. Check young shoot tips regularly as honeysuckle plants are susceptible to aphid damage, particularly when grown in full sun. Prune immediately after flowering, first removing the oldest stems, then reducing the remaining stems to restrict their vigorous growth to the available space. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Honeysuckle berries are harmful if eaten.
