Description

Fargesia rufa is an award-winning bamboo, with a classic weeping umbrella shape and young bright green stems that mature to yellow-green. The stem sheaths and side branches develop attractive shades of copper. Shiny, evergreen foliage is light to dark green, depending on whether it is grown in bright light or shade.

Unlike many other bamboos, Fargesia rufa is a clumping, non-invasive variety. Although it takes a little longer than running bamboos to fill in, it will grow into a dense screen that is perfect for hiding eyesores or providing privacy. Its clumping habit and medium height also make this variety perfect as a specimen accent planted in containers, or in borders, where you won’t have to worry about it taking over your garden. Moreover, unlike other clumping varieties, which tend to be less frost tolerant, Fargesia rufa is extremely hardy, as well as tolerant of heat and sun. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Maximum height: 3m (10ft). Spread: 1.5m (5ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
When growing Fargesia rufa in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Fargesia is a non-invasive, clump-forming bamboo.
More Info
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
