Description

The Kew Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.

Eryngium giganteum 'Miss Willmott's Ghost' is well worth growing for its architectural flower-cones, each encircled by a spikey, ornate bract. The pale silver-green stems rise above steely, heart-shaped foliage. This biennial or short-lived perennial will happily seed over the years to produce stunning drifts.

Sea Holly thrives on well-drained soils and this one no exception. Grow Eryngium giganteum in gravel gardens or dotted among swaying grasses for a dramatic textural contrast. The tall stems make a useful addition to dried flower arrangements, but spare some stems in the border, where pollinating insects will benefit from their nectar-rich blooms. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Sowing

Sow Eryngium from February to July on the surface of a good seed compost, lightly cover with a dusting of compost or vermiculite, and gently firm down. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 65-70F (18-20C), or seal inside a polythene bag for 14 days. Do not exclude light as this aids germination.

Germination can be slow. If germination doesn’t occur after 2 weeks then move the seeds to a refrigerator for 3-6 weeks. Return to the recommended germination temperature. If germination does not occur in 6-10 weeks, then return to the fridge for a further 3-6 weeks. Examine regularly whilst in the fridge and remove immediately the seeds show signs of germinating.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to move outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.

Grow on in a cold frame and plant out the following spring on well-drained soil in full sun.

More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until plants are fully established. Leave faded Eryngium flower heads in place until spring to benefit from the winter interest they will add to your borders. In cold wet soils, use a cloche to protect the crown of the plant from winter rainfall. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Eryngium in spring. Only lift it when necessary as sea holly can be slow to re-establish.
