Description

This award-winning small tree delivers gorgeous spring blossom, autumn fruits and excellent wildlife value. Originating in 1858, Crataegus media ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ has long been a popular choice for small gardens. It forms a small tree with a rounded crown, less thorny than the wild species and clothed in dark green lobed leaves. In May it bears masses of fully double, light red flowers followed by small red haws in autumn. It provides dense cover for nesting birds which also enjoy the red berries. This extremely hardy tree tolerates a wide range of soils including shallow chalk and is resistant to urban pollution, exposed positions and coastal sites. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 6m (19.6ft). Spread: 5m (16.4ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Crataegus plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Hawthorn at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Crataegus requires only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in winter. If grown as a hedge, Hawthorn can be trimmed in Summer or Autumn, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
