Description

Masses of sparkling white flowers, fragrance and glossy, evergreen foliage – what more could you ask of a climber? Clematis armandii ‘Snowdrift’ is a superb performer, quickly clothing walls, trellis and unsightly features with its handsome foliage. Demanding little maintenance and no routine pruning, it can disguise high structures with ease. All it needs is a sheltered site in a sunny south or west-facing area. From March to April it produces elegant, pure white flowers, crisply cut into a star shape and complemented by green anthers. The almond-scented flowers are especially welcome in the early spring garden when borders are bare.

Height: 5m (15’). Spread: 3m (10’). Pruning group: 1

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train Clematis armandii plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a large pergola.
More Info
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year's growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning Clematis armandii, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within it's alloted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
