Description

Resembling a human hand, the weird fruits of Citrus 'Hand of Buddha' are like no other!

Segmented into slender, finger-like sections that resemble the open-cupped hand gesture of the Buddha, this ancient fruit has been revered for centuries in Asian culture, symbolising happiness, longevity and prosperity. The bumpy, golden-yellow fruits typically weigh around 400-600g and unlike most citrus varieties, contain no pulp, seeds or juice. Instead they consist mostly of soft, white pith and are highly prized for their extraordinary shape and incredible fragrance—a blend of zesty lemon with complex floral notes.

Highly aromatic, Buddha’s hand is commonly used in China and Japan for perfuming rooms and clothing. It is also a traditional offering in Buddhist temples. The peel, dotted with tiny oil glands, carries a bittersweet flavour and serves as a versatile ingredient in cuisine, perfumery, and herbal remedies. Grate it as an alternative to lemon zest to enhance desserts, savoury dishes, beverages, and infused spirits. Rich in Vitamin C and other nutrients, it offers both culinary and health benefits.

Citrus 'Hand of Buddha' is also highly valued as an eye-catching ornamental tree, adorned with large, oblong leaves that add to its exotic appeal. Clusters of waxy white flowers, purplish on the underside, appear throughout the year, releasing a sweet perfume that fills the air.

A fascinating fruit tree with exotic beauty, a rich cultural history and culinary versatility, Citrus 'Hand of Buddha' is a unique addition to any citrus collection.

This frost tender tree is best grown in large containers on a sunny, sheltered patio for the summer and moved to a frost-free position indoors from autumn to spring. Alternatively, it suits growing in a frost free conservatory/heated greenhouse all year round.

Height: 3m (9.8ft). Spread: 2.5m (8.2ft).

How to Grow
Plant citrus trees in patio containers in a mix of ericaceous compost and neutral, soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in a frost free position in full sun.
More Info
Stand citrus trees outside from May to October. Water freely in summer and mist leaves daily to increase humidity and discourage pests. Feed with citrus plant fertiliser every 2 weeks. Move plants indoors from October to a bright, frost free position (4-12°C) away from cold draughts and radiators. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the plant dry out completely. Too much or too little water may cause the fruits to drop.
