It’s not hard to see why Cirsium rivulare ‘Atropurpureum’ has become such a fashionable perennial. From a clump of slightly spiny basal leaves, rise tall, stiff, leafless stems, crowned with clusters of long-lasting, thistle-like flowers. The abundant flowers are a sophisticated, deep burgundy colour and are held well above the canopy of other mounding perennials, creating strong vertical accents. It’s an elegant plant, but one with a naturalistic appearance which looks equally at home in a modern border paired with grasses or a traditional, cottage-style scheme. Cirsium rivulare is perfect for wildlife gardens too, with bees and butterflies swarming to its nectar-rich blooms. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 90-120cm (35-47in). Spread: 60cm (24in).
