Description

A unique variety, each branch has a distinctive zig-zag pattern, creating a strikingly graphic silhouette.

The dynamic, jagged lines of Cercis ‘Zig Zag’ provide interest through winter and into March/April, when the bare branches are smothered in small, pea-like pink flowers, creating an impressive spring spectacle. The flowers provide an excellent source of early pollen and nectar for bees. The blooms are followed by attractive, heart-shaped leaves, with the framework of zig-zagging branches revealing themselves again after autumn leaf-fall sees the foliage transform to orange shades.

This small, slow-growing tree makes a striking specimen for small to medium gardens providing interest throughout the year. Maximum height: 6m (20ft). Maximum spread: 7.6m (25ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Cercis chinensis in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a sheltered position in full sun. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant Eastern Redbud trees at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery.
More Info

In the first few years after planting, water Cercis trees regularly, particularly during dry periods, until fully established. Cercis chinensis will naturally form a handsome, often multi-stemmed tree. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in late winter if necessary.
