Description

Basking in the dappled shade of a woodland type border or planted into a large container in a shady corner of the patio, the glossy, evergreen foliage of Camellia sasanqua ‘White’ provides a quiet presence during the summer as a backdrop to more vivid bedding. But come autumn, when the garden landscape has lost its energy and colour, it suddenly unveils a wonderful surprise. From late autumn to winter, Camellia sasanqua ‘White’ bears masses of flowers, smaller than spring-flowering camellias but produced in striking profusion. The pure white flowers are around 5cm diameter, with slightly ruffled petals surrounding yellow anthers. On top of their exquisite beauty, on still autumn days you can also enjoy their wonderful perfume! Cut a few for the vase and continue to enjoy their glamour and fragrance indoors. Height and spread: 4m (13ft).

How to Grow
Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.
More Info

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
